Champagne GH MARTEL & Co Company Information

Martel & Co was founded in 1869 by a harvesting owner from Avenay Val d’Or, a small town a few miles from Epernay. In 1979, with the death of André Tabourin, The House of Ernest Rapeneau acquired a majority shareholding in G.H. Martel with the aim of establishing G.H. Martel & Co as the spearhead for its activities in Champagne. The Rapeneau family originated from the Marne department and had been specialising in the wine trade since the first half of the 19th Century.

On the strength of this success, the new G.H. Martel & Co Group now extends over a large stock of vineyards planted with Chardonnay and Pinot. The company has three traditional pressing centres, 20,000 m2 of cellars and 55,000 hl of vats, some of which are of the most modern stainless steel design with temperature regulation.

The personality of G.H. Martel & Co Champagne is based on the know-how of the Rapeneau family, which has been involved in making this white wine for four generations.
While preserving its intimate, family atmosphere, the House is now opening its beautiful medieval chalk cellars, hollowed out between the 4th and 15th Centuries, its Champagne Eco-museum and 18th Century buildings to the public.

After the showing of a presentation film "Champagne", which consists of an introduction to the wine estate and its production techniques, you will find, in the cool cellars hollowed out by the man, a unique collection of machines and tools from the Champagne region that were used for planting and maintaining the slopes right up to harvesting: silent witnesses of an ancestral expertise.

Then, you'll see the vinification tools and equipment that will be used in making our wines. As you follow this discovery circuit, you can admire our Gallo-Roman "Crayères", chalk cellars that go down to a depth of up to 22 meters.
Following the guided tour you'll have an opportunity to try three of our wines, along with tasting comments.
